Try vbulletin. They have great support and the cost is well worth it. In addition, the modding community is sweet. I would advise against going with free bloated scripts..

I'd go with vbulletin too because it's the best out there.

I suggest that you use MYBB.

For one thing, most forums will close before they are 1 year old. I think the number is as high as 95% of all forums will close before they hit one year old. But nobody knows exactly how many close, but the number is very, very high.

With this in mind, why drop almost $200 on VBulletin and then close your forum within that first year?

My suggestion is to use a free forum software for 6 months - 1 year just to see if the community will take off. During that time if you decide to close the site, you have not lost anything. You can walk away and not ask yourself why you spent the money.

In other words, play it safe, go with a free forum software such as MYBB for the first year. When you get some traffic and start making some money, then buy something like Vbulletin or invision power board.

If you don't want to spend 180-200 $... phpBB3 would be a good choice.

    Your welcome.

I have seen a lot of people just like yourself buy Vbulletin, and open a new forum hoping to get lots of members. In 4 months they are asking if they should keep the site open and in 6 - 8 months the site is closed. That $180 could have been put to other uses, such as helping pay a house note, or buying food for the family.

Most of have real bills, and a family that we have to take care of. $180 for VB might not be a lot of money to some people. But to others its half a house note, or half a car note. That $180 might be more money then some people spend on food for an entire month.

That is why I recommend that new forum owners not jump into buying a VB or Invision power board right off the bat. Because most of us have real bills that have to be paid first.

Start your forum with something like MYBB. See how things go for the first year and save your money. If you put back $20 a month, you will be able to buy VB when your forum turns 1 year old.

I totally agree with Kev on this one.

I have started a handful of forums in the past; in the beginning, I went straight for the gold: vBulletin and IPB. Long story short, the forums died and I ended up selling the licenses.

The next project I started (Which was a year ago, today) was with MyBB. I didn't want to make the same mistake.
Lucky me, the site took off like a rocket. It did great in the first couple of weeks, and I switched to vBulletin a month after launch. (I purchased a leased one-year license)

I was very pleased with the result. The MyBB -> vBulletin conversion was easy and I didn't lose much of any data.
Now a year later, the site is continuing to improve and I am wanting to switch to an owned license of vBulletin (check my signature).

vBulletin is the best, IMO. It is a strong script, and is backed with awesome support, and the ever-improving developer updates. Not to mention, the release of vB 4.0 has me and most other vBulletin-enthusiasts very anxious.
