He played a bad guy role in the disguise of an innocent man almost up to the level of perfection.

I was drinking with some coworkers in London about a decade ago. Our group was an interesting mix. It was me, a Dutch fellow, Welsh guy, a Frenchman, a Spanish lady, an Indian woman from California, and a Pakistani Brit lady. The conversation turned to politics and I quoted Gandhi as part of a minor point I was making on an unrelated topic.

    Holy hell...

My previously mild mannered Pakistani Brit co-worker went nuts. It was as if I had gone to Israel and made a toast to the health of Adolph Hitler. She went off on a tirade about how Gandhi was a murdering bastard and and and and and... it went so fast I can't claim to have understood half of what she was saying.

I don't think she ever looked at me the same after that day. I had quoted the evil Gandhi and therefore I was "one of them" forever. :p

You have no idea about how Gandhi is vilified in Pakistan's school curriculum!! I mean I too have some criticism for the guy but the extent to which the syllabus in Pakistan goes is ludricious.

I'm glad that I don't know. The more I learn about Pakistan the less I want to know.

The Paki's have absorbed a lot of Arab culture:
When there is failure, often outside forces are blamed. Anger, resentment, and violence are focused on outside elements in order to shift the blame to them. In the case of other Orientals with similar shame/honor type cultures, failure is often focused on the individual, and, for example, a Japanese businessman may take his life when faced with tremendous shame. In an Arab situation, the Arabs will assign blame to someone else and react violently towards him.

Lets get real. US profited from the war mongering in Europe, the first WW made it rich, the second made it richer. If the WW didn't take place US would be some impoverished nation and mexicans would be complaining about illegal US immigrants.

LOL, if call getting free stuff from colonies and selling manufactured goods in colonies by destroying their domestic industries "trade". I'm rolling on the floor right now.

Though I trust that your governments never taught you stuff that would make you feel ashamed as an American...

No, we all get educated on the stuff, its just that self-loathing is a trait reserved for the liberals amongst us.

They must really teach some fucked up shit in Indian schools.

You have some of the most bizarrely unrealistic ideas of American history I've ever seen. You're so far off base that I don't think you can get straight without starting over from the beginning. It's useless to argue detail points when you start from such a screwball position. Go back a couple hundred years and start over.

I'm not sure that the government ever taught me anything.

The last election made me feel ashamed to be an American, and I am seriously considering switching to another citizenship.

Now now, are you sure that doesn't have anything to do with Obama's commitment to go after Ex-Pats for tax dollars? I was friends with a guy who started up operations for one of the big five consulting firms in Singapore(OK, I dated his daughter, but whatever). He told me most of his staff had dropped their US citizenship for tax purposes in favor of the UK after a few short years. I suspect that if Obama does secure the borders, it won't be to prevent people from coming in. It will be to prevent the rich from leaving.

Like the article says, expats are being driven away. I should reduce my DP posting and start writing more for Expat Intelligence. We are seeing more Americans move overseas and more of those who move overseas change their citizenship. America is losing it's best and it's brightest due to extremely bad government.

This is humorous, in a sense, because extremely bad government was what caused these people's ancestors to leave their homes and travel to America.

Do not generalize my friend. Everyone does not have the same views as Helvetti, which in this case are indeed quite absurd.

Are you saying that UK didn't steal wealth from its colonies or that US didn't benefit from the world wars?

You people talk shit about all presidents, really.

Gandhi was a good man as what is told and taught us here in Pakistan, but I personally think that all his quotes and teachings are not unique.
