Im rebuilding my website, www.zoopedup.com Now with that comes a new fresh skin.. this is what I have so far www.charlnorman.com/zu7/ this is far from done as I need to add some functionality - its just a skin - non functional. the nav doesnt work Now that design is already not 800 x 600 friendly.. and I still want to add sky scraper ads down the right side. Will building a website for 1024 x 768 hurt alot of my visitors that use 800 x 600 I checked my AwStats program and 20% of my traffic uses 800 x 600.. 800 pixels just gives you so little space..
You answered your own question. 20% of your traffic uses 800x600. Why would you want to piss off 20% of your users?
i know i know... but I see so many large sites that dont fit in 800 x 600.. isnt it time these visitors upgrade.. sigh
most of the sites i do are still 800*600 but some of the clients are increasingly requesting 1024. I guess it will take another year for it to catch on totally.
i was also thinking about whats the best screen size to design for my new website. i think you should stick to the 800.
I prefer 1 fluid design using percentages instead of fixed size, so depending on your design you can get covered both, users at 800 and those at 1024
This was a question I faced when starting my site. After checking from a variety of different computers (friends/family/work/public etc) I decided on 1024 x 768 as the best setting/resolution to work with. It seemed to work for all the variety of settings that I saw being used. But I am now considering the future of screen resolution settings myself. eg. what will the average user be running with in 2 years time..... Darren.
Well yeah definatly but im not as skilled as you my friend. Thanx D, this is good feedback although If I surf a site with scroller everywhere it really pisses me off.. Im gonna loose alot of visitors. Maybe I should move some of the content boxes from the right down.. Make the site longer but less width
i would stick with 800 at least for another year, most people who screens and resolution wont handle or dont have 800x600 will still be able see the full site without any scrolling. Plus i find alot of people even if they have a large monitor dont use the full screen while surfing the net. I know i dont all the time, i tend to have a few programs working and use firefox in a small screen (reckon about 400x300)
Another year to three is not enough time. We have been putting nineteen inch and larger monitors out there for years. Come back a couple weeks later and the users have switched them to 800 x 600. There are surprisingly few in the High-resolution Anonymous twelve-step recovery program. My guess is 800 x 600 will only go out with the CRT. But that's not to say design just for 800 x 600. By using floating elements a page can look good at different resolutions.
A great benefit of having a large screen is being able to have multiple windows open and visible at the same time. I cannot imagine wasting all that space on a single maximized window. Though I have 1280 and 1600px width screens, my open apps seldom exceed 800px in width. cheers, gary
I used to design sites at 780px and let them expand to fill the screen, but lately I've been into designing banners accross the top of the entire site (I just think it looks cool), so now I design for 995px and expand them. May not be what everyone is doing but it works for me and my visitors (many of them use the forums and like the full screen width).
Zooped, and everyone that cares... Your minimum screen resolution today is typically 800x600, stick to designing it that way... center your layout, OR like suggested above pay, or learn how to properly code a "fluid" layout. Think about everyone, not just one group. If you're coding a site and don't know what you're doing, considering hiring a real web developer, or finding one that can assist you. The reason I am coming off as harsh is because I see too many business/professional websites that were thrown together in Frontpage/Dreamweaver, not to downgrade this software, but HTML is not difficult, and if you can't code a single HTML page in less than an hour, stop charging to do website development. If anyone has any discrepencies with my posting, please use the PM as I do not like getting my name spread around negatively because of one forum member not agreeing. Thanks guys! BTW> My website is www.interceptdesigns.net - Is it perfect? No, BUT, it covers the spectrum of browsers and users, and I'd like to think it's a very simplistic design... let me know what you think if you want. Have a good life guys!
800x600 screen resolution but some may want to go higher 1028x768 screen.. which you can make your tables to be centered and width size about 720.
