What ranks better : '.info' or '.com'

    Hey fellow dp-ers

I surf the net a lot in search of new niches with low competition.

I have noticed one thing every time I searched , .info weren't ranked all that well , even if they had my search key word in their domain name .

Was it just that , they didn't have enough back links and proper SEO done ? or google doesn't give enough weight to '.info' domains .

    Please enlighten me !

There are onpage and offpage factors for search ranking.
Why you dont make a research and see the difference between the first *.com and first *.info domain for (onpage and offpage factors)

I think that only benefit for *.com in my opinion is that people first type *.com in the browser.

Whether it's .info, .com., or .net should not matter when it comes to SERPs, although .com is usually preferable for other reasons (such as the age of and people's familiarity with this TLD). Geographic top level domains can affect rankings somewhat. For example if your target market is in the UK you want to register a .co.uk domain name. But as for variation between .com and .info, I don't believe one is considered to be more important than another when it comes to SERPs.

The domain extension doesn't matter to Google. But it often matters to the person who might give you links. If you can get a .com with your keywords in it take that over a .info.

As others have already said, if you're trying to rank in Google.com (not a country specific Google) then the all non-country specific TLDs should be treated the same.

However, I think you'll get a better click-thru-rate on a .com than you would on a .info domain. I would use .com, .net or .org before I was use a .info.

There was concern a while ago that Google was purging .info domains. The reaoning seemed to be that some registrars were offering .info domains at give away prices which attracted spammers thus devaluing the domain. While there are many .info domains in the search results the fact that this is a possibility would put me off. If there is any hint Google has a bias against an .info domain I would steer clear.

Not start trouble, but I'm not sure I would agree with some of the posts regarding .info being just as good for SERPS as .com. Here's why: The .info extension has been available for purchase since 2001. Fast forward to today (roughly 8 years later) and, as a test, take a random term of your choice and run it through Google. Then sort through the results until you come to the first .info extension that is ranked for that search. I checked 4 or 5 different terms that just popped into my head and couldn't find a .info extension for any of the terms in the first 5-7 results pages of Google. The best .info extension SERP listing I saw was in the 53rd position.

Now take into consideration that .com has been the preferred extension since it was introduced and it makes sense that older, more established .com domains would control the first 2 pages of Google. I'm not saying that a .info couldn't, can't, or won't rank well in the SERPs, and I'm sure someone here can provide proof of a .info domain that ranks well for a certain term; but, personally, I'd take a .com over a .info any day.

from my experience, there is no difference, if there is, it is quite mininmal. .COM is most recognized extension, which might attract more users vs .info

Well, it is more involved than this and to Google some .info's can be deindexed if they follow a spamming pattern or on a specific IP address. I've seen it happen, .info's are a spammers paradise, mainly because they are so cheap, and the search engines are aware of this.

Also, all about back links. pfft It's not, but it is the easy way and building too many too fast can bust you in the chops.

You need to look at the quality of the .info sites as well when comparing their SERPs. .info may have been around since 2001 but because they sell at $.99 - $1.99 a domain name, they're a favorite with blackhat MFA, scraper type webmasters. Which is a good reason to stay away from .info domains; you get the baggage from the spammers that went before you. :( No disrespect to anyone with a .info domain, but I tend not to click on .info links, no matter where they are in the SERPs.

Not sure that I agree 100% here. I created a new domain for a site I am working on. The domain was purchased just one month ago.

I have been using all the SEO techniques I know to optimise the pages. I have no backlinks yet and I am allready on page #3 for my singular targeted keyword. The keyword returns 900,000 page entries.

So, if it is all about backlinks then it shouldn't be hard to smash page 1. :)

Google quite considers .com more and .info is mainly used by spammers. :)
But afterall, its all game of backlinks, i see many .info on First position in google for some really competitive keywords ;)

Domain extension is not related to SERP anyway.

When it comes to ranking by google, dot com has an edge over dot info.
