build some credibility. demonstrate what you know and how you can help your clients. there are lot of service providers out there and the clients will only hire the person/company whom they see suitable for the job. while some clients look for cheaper services, there are a lot of clients who prefer quality over cheap/low cost services. serious business owners realize that they get what they pay for so instead of focusing on the pricing too much, focus on the quality. then price your service based on what you think is a right compensation for you. try to network with people from various different areas and let them know what you do. cold calling to potential clients is not a good idea in my book because i would not myself buy anything form telemarketers. while there are some legit companies out there, most people are tired of telemarketing calls these days. besides, there is national do not call list here in Canada and i believe there is something similar in the US also so you need to be careful whom you cal. print out some business cards and hand out to local business owners. advertise on local business news or magazines. there are so many ways....
You might also want to try selling your services on Ebay. The top SEO on there is some guy who posts a picture of himself. I tried selling a similar service but I didn't make any sales. It seems like he's hogging up all the business. He has his own business name and website to help legitimize himslelf He also has quite a bit of feedback which proves what he can do.
Word of mouth works surprisingly well. Get into small talk with anybody you can and work in that you do SEO to as many of them as you can. You'd be surprised who's looking for SEO. Get a good looking business card and hand it out each time you bring it up. Rank in your region for the terms.. SEO, search engine optimization, marketing, etc. Advertise on CraigsList, get a phone number for your business, make a nice looking ad. (You can use images in CL posts, and HTML, so making your ad look good is easy.) There's probably some type of community board on your local news website, get on all of those. If you live in a big city, then CL can keep you pretty well tied up. When I lived in LA, I couldn't advertise every day.. I could only advertise about 2 days a week or else I'd just be swamped with leads. One thing that I always did with SEO services in the LA area was posted in the barter section, you can convert a lot of those into paying customers by not being interested in their shit for trade.
You can offer your first service to a prospect for free until you gain credibility, sort of like a sample that way you can prove yourself and the potential client has nothing to lose.
