What Qualifies as Duplicate Content?

I like to resubmit articles I've published to Ezine or my own sites to other sites and traditionally what I've done is rewrite the first paragraph or so, tweaking the title, then linking back to the original article. I'll then submit that article to other article directories. But I was wondering recently is that sufficient editing to avoid duplicate content backlash? I'm still a member of all of these other article sites, so I didn't know if there was some, less obvious backlash I'm not aware of. Thoughts?

There is a great article here; http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-illustrated-guide-to-duplicate-content-in-the-search-engines - which covers this.

If you want to find out if you are being penalised for dupe content, then I find the best way is to cut and paste 20 word sections from your content or the offending content into google and see what happens. If you don't see your page for content that is on your website, then there is a chance you are being penalised.

It seems to me like you have done quite enough to change them a bit. As long as you published it on your site first, then ezine you should be OK. Now as far as a duplicate content backlash, that is more of a fallacy. What happens, at least with Google, is that the first content submitted for indexing, or published for indexing, will get crawled and indexed. All other identical content will be filtered out, meaning that it will not get indexed. The only way people see duplicate content getting indexed rapidly is because it was done with some sort of unethical method like black-hat SEO, which eventually catches up to them.

many have tried that, use some spinner to re-construcit their article and re-submit it. I haven't get news about the result of it but I find it risky for their site.

I also recommend that you use dupefreepro as well as copyscape. However, I think you have done your part with regards to changing the content a bit. I always try re-writing before bookmarking, pinging or submitting my articles. But whatever you do, ALWAYS link back to the original, otherwise some directories will deny approval if they find any duplication of the content.

i will give you some techniques to avoid duplicate content...take your published article and shuffle the words using your own words and put in Google, that shows your duplicate content. it you did not find your rewrittened article in any websites then you can submit it for any article directories.

Here is what Google said about duplicated content:
Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar. Mostly, this is not deceptive in origin. Examples of non-malicious duplicate content could include:

    * Discussion forums that can generate both regular and stripped-down pages targeted at mobile devices
    * Store items shown or linked via multiple distinct URLs
    * Printer-only versions of web pages

You should not worry what is or what isn't duplicate content.

Google readily and willingly indexes duplicate content. It's not a problem.
The problem is when you are using it to try and fool or schmooze google.
Then, you will probably be slapped. Duplicate content abounds online.
And most of it is just fine. Think about ezinearticles. The whole premise
is to get duplicate content published.

If I can take the some of the same content, repackage and sell it better,
why shouldn't google reward me? Duplicate content can be used in
    some very good ways.

If your site is full of nothing but stuff that can easily be gotten off of another
site, then there is not much worth to your website. But it's the worth of your
website that gets slapped, not so much the duplicate content. You add a little
dupe content here, a little there, and spruce up the visitor experience, there
    is no problem.

As much as possible, I try to stay clear of that especially when writing content for a website but it never hurts to double check it so it isn’t picked up by google and penalized, which effects the performance of the site and I used Xenu and Google webmaster is my tool for checking duplicate content.

duplicate content is a problem. In case you have a few instances of duplicate content here and there, shouldn't be too much of a problem . The problem happens when there are pages and pages of duplication . In you case, i dont' think it should be too much of problem. Just keep in mind that it generally rewrite something with a clean slate instead of changin a few words here and there. Also sometime there is just a filtration of the duplicate content and not necessarily a penalty. but then that depends on google. Safe side avoid dupli content
