what qualifies as a backlink?

I have posted on directories before and even to this day I will go to a site like backlinkwatch and it doesn't list that link as a backlink, even if it may come up in google when I do a search. I find this kind of unusual. Is there something I am missing about this?

I just did a google search on this...is this relatively recent news? I didn't get a sense from the article that I read that it is useless, but I did seem to read that it was not as useful as it may have been. Does anyone else also agree with vstar on this? I hired someone to build my links up, so if the game has changed I need to get in touch with him quickly.

    Some info here: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1062261

IMHO backlinks from directories are not as useful as they used to be a few years ago.
We should ask Matt Cutts if they're completely useless now :)

The following recommendation has recently been removed from Google’s Webmaster Guidelines

“Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!, as well as to other industry-specific expert sites.”

All back links have "some value" just some not as much as others.

I believe it may be due to business competition. Just to remind you that the health site located in my sig. link got PR2 only from dir. submissons, nothing else.

Sorry to inform you but in-bound links are not the only thing that contributes to PR, there are many other factors involved ;)

Paid directory links still work from authority directories such as yahoo and BOTW but not free directories as vstar said. Don't waste your time with them for link building, they are only useful for traffic purposes, but who looks at directories for websites anyway.

    I've the same problem..
One of my friends said above that Google devalues directories..
    It seems this is true.
