I want to make cool looking buttons, borders, background, etc. Do you just use photoshop, or do you have another program that you like to use. My problem is designing the pics. It's so hard for me to draw or make anything in photoshop.

I use Photoshop mainly. Illustrator would be mainly for (gasp) illustrations for me. But Photoshop is my workhorse. I use it for site comps, site elements, ads, photo retouching, creating elements for print publications I make with inDesign and much more.

As someone who once spent a few years struggling to make simple things (way, way back), I can tell you that spending some quality hours just learning everything you can about Photoshop will pay off.

A lot of people just try to open up from the start, find a tutorial on one thing and then duplicate it. Problem is, they don't really learn about how to use the program, what is going on or much else.

Start with the basics (interface, proper workflow setup, tool explanation) and go from there.

Of course, if you're just going to be doing like one site a year, it would be better to just contract that out or buy templates and move on. :)

If you're serious, spending time learning Photoshop inside and out will pay huge dividends when you want to do more than draw a simple gradient-filled button with a 1px stroke and drop shadow. :D

that's exactly what I thought. I have used photoshop 4 years, but i am terrible at drawing and I just can't make anything of my own. i can modify other peoples work really well, but if i start from scratch i am screwed! oh well, time to go back to studying.

If you're starting out then Photoshop is by far the best. There are tons and tons of tutorials online.

I've been using fireworks for ages, but then again I've been doing that for years.

I use photoshop for editing images. I know many find it difficult using photoshop but once you get a hang of it, it should be easy.

Use The Gimp and Inkscape. They both have everything you need and they're free. Lots of tutorials and they run on all systems.

I use photoshop now for all of my web development needs, however before I got my students license, I used Gimp and Paint.Net to design things like buttons and interfaces. They're awkward to work with, but they got the job done.

Either way, photoshop is THE best tool for making things like buttons.

I'd hit up HV-Designs or something like that for some decent tutorials on the subject.
