I'm building a new system as soon as I get back home from my current assignment and I will be installing Vista with 4 GB of RAM. I am also working on the specs for my first Server which will run Windows Server 08' to be released in 150+ days.

Guys Memory is not the only thing. You need a good processesor. If you are going to try and upgrade to Vista on a system later then 2 years old forget it.

What is so hard in buying one for 500 bucks? If you don't have that money you probably do not need Vista in the first place.

That's the point. It is a pig and the vast majority of users get little benefit. The computer makers don't complain as everyone will eventually have to go through another round of equipment upgrades.:(

My system cost me £210 to build

    x2600xt (£60)
    asus mobo (£40)
    2gb DDR2-6400 ram (CAS 4) (£65)
    AMD 4000x2 (£45)

I got my 19" LCD monitor for free (thank you ebuyer for fucking up)
I had my 250gb hard drive from my previous build (which is 2 years old now)
same for the the DVD drive / sound card ect

    seriously guys
what do you expect with a 2 year old PC that was probably a budget one back then?

    actually
    for the record
my 2 year old build ran vista perfectly fine, and it was still faster than XP.
    that was

    AMD sempron 3000
    AGP nvidia 2600a
    the hdd/dvd drives
some shitty asrock mobo which I had to replace twice
    and yeah

just upgrade to a dual core processor
I'm guessing most of you have intel P4's, or intel celerons?
seriously, guys.. they're so bad and outdated. even when released, AMD was above them. A celeron is just a crippled, faulty P4.. and the P4 with the netburst arch.. well... ;/ sorry you bought it. The C2D's are better than AMD's current line atm, but not by much

and if you want a good system for vista for cheap that'll last more than 2 years
do not buy it from dell. Graphics are a lot more important for vista than you'd think. Integrated graphics, don't bother with. If you don't game, get a nice low end ATI card (a 2600pro or 2400xt) and if you game, get a nvidia 8800GTS (don't bother with the ultra, you can OC the GTS to the same speeds)

I'd say go with aMD too because of the price, but the C2D range is more powerful (not by much, once again)

    so yea

No. It means you are trying to put unleaded fuel in a 1968 car and expect it to run.

I haven't had any problems and I have been running Vista for about two months. The interface is sweet, and I am able to do everything I could on XP (which is a lot!). My computer is used for programming, web design, logo design, content creation, gaming, etc. I run multiple heavy memory using programs at once, and experience nothing but faster multi-tasking than before. No problems at all so I don't understand all the strange issues people are experiencing. People always complain about every Windows OS that is released. Remember XP Sucks discussions anyone? It's like they fear change or something...

Anyway, most issues with Vista spawn from users inexperience such as admin privileges or other very simple tasks that only take a small adjustment.

As it's a new system bought only a few months ago, I doubt there's a problem with the wireless card. A problem with the windows wireless manager? More probably.

You mean £2000. I buy Dell Latitudes, which are a hell of a lot more expensive than standard "consumer" systems. The can run it but I still wouldn't buy a new one even if they couldn't

Nope my laptop is a Pentium M and my notebook is a Core 2 Duo.

I did, and I will for my next computer as well. It depends what you buy, as with any manufacturer.

My notebook runs Vista on an Intel 945 GM. So, in fact, integrated graphics work fine. As I said, Vista works fine but just uses more resources.

    pentium m is just like a P4 / celeron
    same old same

do you need support with your system? (dell support sucks anyway :/ but that's beyond the point)

if not, why pay all the extra money for something that's inferior?

do you know how to build a PC? it's easier than you think
    google for some tutorials
    and to get your parts-
    www.newegg.com

    honestly
    you'll save 100's
give me a dell PC and I'll find everything it has for cheaper.. it's just DIY

I have the same graphics on my laptop
but I was mainly talking about desktops
it's just not needed for them

laptops need integrated graphics (and may I add, intel's done a great job with the 945GM) to minimize power consumption

    desktops don't

Nope, Pentium M is a fair bit more efficient than the P4.

Nope, though the warrenty is quite handy.

I buy Latitude laptops. Better build quality, magnesium-alloy casing, shock-protected hard drive, 3-year accidental damage and theft coverage. That's what I pay the extra money for.

If you think you can build an equvilent laptop for cheaper, then please be my guest.

I have a dedicated graphics card in my 1 of my laptops, it's only my newer ultraportable notebook that has an integrated one.

I would agree that you don't need integrated graphics on a desktop but I don't buy desktops. I like laptops.
