Content must be fresh and informative, no of words should be a secondary concern. I've submitted article in 2nd week of May 2011 with an approx. length of 350 words & still got it approved in many article directories.
anything above 500 is good for SEO. But try to keep it less than 800 else you will bore away your visitors and no one will reach till the bottom of your article...
It depends upon the matter of article. but i think 500 words are sufficient for a topic written for purpose of seo

The length is very hard to tell these days. Instead try anything that makes sense to real people and gets shared.
