    I think you question is how is having some cool features like jobs....etc.....
    1. he has made that template to cater his needs (calender search box sidebar)
    2. for jobs & events he has integrated a forum type of forum or cms or plugin into wp (ned to search this plugin or whats o ever)
    3. showing forum/board posts in sidebar is not a great deal....
    4. Mybloglog widget to track recent readers...as told by bdude
