I am thinking of creating a new adwords campaign... what is the most critical parts I must get right from the start and also what are the most critical parts of a initial adwords setup do newbies screw and what must I do to avoid this

What are the steps I should take when creating a new campaign and which of them I can not afford to mess up

For a newbie, i would suggest below

step 1. Draw your site structure on a paper
step 2. outline your important pages where you need traffic (This will be your landing pages for each adgroup we gonna build in next steps)
step 3. research keywords, as many as you could for each of those pages and save in notepad
step 4. create a campaign in adwords and adjust upper level settings
step 5. create 1 ad group for each of the pages you outlines in step 2 (More adgroups on later stage, for now create one for each landing page)
step 6. put the keywords you collected in step 3 for each ad-group, write 2 ad copies for the ad-group and point it to the right landing page for this one
step 7. set a budget and hit GO.

    research
. this is what most new comers ignores or skip or lazy to do or for whatever reason. it costs a lot in long run. (I will explain below why)

Relevancy- Everywhere. that means keyword research and landing page setup. if your landing page is not relevant enough you will get a very bad quality score which will result in higher bid with lower placement means lower CTR means a bit higher big again. So its all a complex mix of relevancy and doing it wrong will simply skyrocket your bid while lowering down your clicks and sales .. that's where most of the people says adwords does not work anymore :(

Research, You must know who your competitors are and what they are doing.
Prepare to split test : you must prepare to spit test each and everything you do and figure out the best one , this is something which needs to be planned from start. In middle of your business if I as an adword guy ask you to give me a complete redesign of your sales page, you might laugh but if from the beginning i ask you to get 2 -3 version of the page and split test the traffic on stuffs, that will make more sense. Again this is something people simply ignore

let me know if i missed something

    Hi Gtc...

Great feedback ... Now confused on what questions should i be asking myself as far as setting goals, what metrics should i set to measure progress towards my goals, and what custom reports should ask for that eliminates alot of noise and clutter and gives me quickly and overview of what is important ... I do not what items in a report I should be asking for since I do not have this experience ...

Researching ppc competition is crucial and I do not hear any mention on how to maximize this aspect of kw research...

Oh ... I understand your english quite well ... you would be amazed on how others born in US write ... you write well and clear...no problem understanding all that you wrote ...;>)

If you want to use board match, you have to put a lot of negative keywords in case they might trigger something you don't want.

    It's WTG ;)

you should have a goal for you already. For example how many clients you can handle being said its a offline business. Then you should decide how many you want out of those from internet sources, then you should decide how many you want from adwords. and there you go. you got your goal that you want XX number of leads a month from Adwords anyhow.

Now once you have a goal, you should create a pipeline (Funnel can say) which should produce at least that number of leads by the end of the month. so at the start of the funnel you might have XX * 100 numbers (Number of click on your website for example-the first gate of your funnel) and then out of those clicks how many passed through the lead gen form (the 2nd step) and out of those how many responded to your phone call or how many had a meting set with you (depends on the business you are in) and then its the number how many actually became a true lead for you (the number you set initially).

Now one thing to realize here is, a big number of people will bounce off from each gate. thats normal and nothing to be surprised if you see that.. you could configure goal tracking in Google analytics to exactly visualize this data which will show you at what step what happaned in a funnel type image.

    a funnel looks like this

1.the main gate (The adword click which lands a user to your website)
    2. the interest step (the user which filled up the form on your website to know more)
    3. the take action step( the user which responded to your phone call, and set a metting or discuession time) (that makes him a lead)
    4. the decision making step ( when the user decided to buy from you or make a purchase )

PS: the technical term for each step in a funnel is different , however to make it easy to understand i used easy terms, not for you but for the 200 others who is reading this thread. I know you are qualified to understand this process )

keyword research and competition analysis is a real complex thing to explain or understand in one go. the easy approach is (If on short budget) to target most relevent long term keywords which might get less but targeted traffic in less competition rather then burning $$$ on every genric keywords 100s others are bidding on.
