Hi, I am about to make a new directory. But i am not sure what name to give it. Is it better the have a name that describes the directory (ie. TheCarsDirectory.com ) or something sounds nice like yahoo or google? ( something easy to memorize) Any suggestions?
I guess it depends on what your aiming to do with the site. If you want to build it into a brand in it's own right, then a name that is distinctive and stands out is the way to go. Otherwise, something simple and descriptive like AllAboutAutos or whatever would be best.
I think a domain that tells you what the site is about is best. It should catch more search results, and instantly tells people what your site is about. Mark
my advice would be to invest in a domain from the start if you can. go for as generic as you can afford...pick out your top keywords and add the extension and make them an offer. If you're just starting off with a non-registered domain, just use your main keyword and add something to it. ie...if it's glassblower directory: glassblowingcentral.com or similar.
take something everyone would be able to remember AND spell without making knots in their tongues ;-)
Search engines value keywords that are in the name highly. I would take my top two or three key words and try different combos. - But avoid domain names that do not "ring" - it needs to not sound forced.
Do both. Use the domain that is built with keywords and develop it. Spend your seo time there. Get the name that is brandable and develop it as well. Now you can target a whole new set of phrases around the brand that you want to become. Set up sub domains on your brandable site that target specific niches that are part of your first "keyword domain". Fill some of your link content for this subdomain from the other main site (this will create value to your keyword site). You wont get a duplicate penalty because you will also have unique content on this site. On your keyword site. Put sitewide banners of various sizes that that lead to your brandable site. Cross promote the sites. Spend most of your offline advertising $ on the site that is easy to remember. Spend most of your seo time on the site that should be easier to move up the rankings. Revaluate your situation every 4-6 months and adjust your strategy.
well something like yahoo or google is good but it needs too much promotion so people could memorize it
Well apart from promotion, if the website gives you a good service, you will memorize it without the need of promotion.
