What methods work best for building up base of readers for my blog.

I am looking to get away from niche blogs and want to build an animal blog.

Since I don't want to depend on Google Search rankings to provide my traffic, I'm leaning towards building up good quality content that will stay relevant.
I want to build a strong base of readers to my blog that will consistently come back.

I've had good experiences with adding a comment box and Polls (so allow readers to vote) to my blog that have helped bring some consistent readers but
I want to learn some other of the best ways to help create a following.

I've also heard e-mails can work to help market a blog.. but with my content being based around Animals I'm not sure how effective that will be for me.

Suggestions anyone? Does Social Networking help increase traffic and returning visitors?

Try to add your content to reddit or digg. If you will create community around your blog you will get returning visitors. Facebook is helpfull.

Write well, write often. Be sure to add links to Youtube. Submit your blogs to search engines, also update your blogroll.
Respond to comments, don't ignore your readers.
Set up a RSS feed button, tag your posts. Submit your posts to social bookmarking sites. Put up a few images now and then.......good luck.:)

There are some hard and fast rules to attracts the visitor and minimize the bounce rate of your site. So that visitors will stay on your site for longer time from one page to another. Not only to develop your content there are lots of other things you need to keep in mind for it. I think you should better have a look at this http://www.opportunitiesplanet.com/blogging/10-ways-to-build-a-better-blog/ first. Try to apply all the points. There's nothing I see not to get the result. If you are benefited please give me some feedback.

    1. Join forums relating to your blog. 2. Make good informative posts in the forums, get to know people, etc. 3. After a week or so, put a link in your signature line. (Don't ram a signature link down someones throat). 4. Go into the forums and find posts by people looking for answers. 5. Go over to your blog and make a post that answers this question. 6. Then go back into the forum and go to that topic and post a reply, give a pointer or two and say something having posted an article to your blog recently addressing this particular problem, and "suggest" they go over and check out the article/post. That way anyone that comes from the forums will be targeted visitors. Hope this helps.

Well first things first, what you need to make sure is that you don't only have creative and attractive website but also interesting and useful content. We always hear this cliche "what is beauty when the brain is empty". what are we going to do with a colorful and attractive website when its content doesn't even have quality.

As for me, content is really important. This is to give the impression that we also do provide quality.
Creativity comes next and success comes after when you've already showed everyone your product.

    Hope this helps.

    Goodluck!

I would do a press release and then spend some money on advertising on social networks and search engines to get targeted audience. That is the best quality audience you would get in smaller time span, but need some money to be spend.

"Tell a Friend" Script is one of the popular ways to drive traffic to your website. It is just a simple script you put into your website where the reader use it to refer friends to a particular page by clicking a button on your website.

The tricky way is you can add your promotion statement in the email. Your promotion statement will get into a prospect by his friend.
