    Hi,

    I run the website xxxxxxxxxxxxx
It is a xxxxxxxxxxxx. I am currently in the process of updating the database and adding more to the website.
Could you possibly link to us from your website? It would greatly help us reach out to a lot more xxxxxxxxxxxxx. If you are ever in need of more visitors to your website, we could link to each other and so the help would be mutual.

Looking forward to hearing back from you,

    Pete --

When emailing people, take the time to make your message as personal as possible. If you can find a person's name, use it, and also put in an adjective about their link page. Your message would benefit from slightly more personalization and being slightly less formal.

If I receive an email like this, by this point I've already hit delete. The ones that start out with "Your site is awesome!" also get deleted.

The emails that get my attention are questions or requests for information. PUT YOUR WEBSITE IN THE SIG so I'll know where you're coming from. If I like your site, I'll link to it.

If I want a link from another site, I do something similar -- ask the site owner a question and stroke his ego a little. A dialogue might be something like this:

ME: "I'm going to visit XYZ City next week and I see that you live in that town. Can you recommend a good restaurant to visit?"

EXPERT: "Hey, thanks for writing. I haven't been there in a while but McGreasies on Main Street is usually good."

ME: "Hey I appreciate the tip. BTW, I mentioned your site on my blog today at www.example.com. Thanks again!"

EXPERT: "Thanks for the link. I really like your blog. I've linked back to you from my homepage!"

Most people still don't really understand the magic of how IBLs work. I've linked to them in a blog post that will scroll off the index page in a day or three, while the other person has often linked to my index page from a home page sidebar. Hence, there is no recip link penalty.

Note: This only works if you have WORTHWHILE CONTENT to link to.

    Hi,

I want you to link to http://www.site.com with anchor text 'blah blah'. Out of all the referers every month I randomly pull one and send them a $1000 cheque. Just confirm you've done the above so I can put your name in the hat.

    Me.

I don't think anyone will actually buy the $1000 check thing. That just smells like a scam.
