I think constantly updating your site makes it a killer site, I am suprised by how many sites have broken links and ou-of-dat info. OS, you are right, people concentrate to much on getting traffic to their site when they need to figure out how they are going to get them to stay.

Nice, soothing colors, purdy pictures, easy navigation, very little flash, I don't make them have to click on a link when they can easily see it on the same page, easy-to-read text, a window opens when a mouse is hovered over the text, the ordering and the "send to a friend" forms are on the same page, the page isn't looooooooong due to endless drivel and oversell...
There is this saying "Content is King". But, I find it too difficult to follow. I think it's because you need to spend plenty of time, effort and money. And don't forget, that everyone else have their own commitment as well.
What do you mean with "way"? Writers who were writing books on a related or exact topic such as mine have asked permissions to quote my websites or publish excerpts. There is way too many spammers out there who write 20 articles per day each 200-300 words. They don't think in the long run and they don't think about their visitors. A surfer will only glance at such an article or remember a sentence or two. If you have well researched (I spent days researching some topics) content, people will link to you and use your content as reference, etc...
My site is being updated by users every day - with very little effort from myself. This is the holy grail
I couldn't agree more. Also the point you made about authority is very important. It is something you have to work towards. Once you start being seen as an authority everything becomes so easy. Links roll in, as does the traffic and the rankings just keep going up. Being linked to from some of the sites in the Alexa top 1000 or technorati top 100 can happen when you become authority - its happened to me.
With regards to content in a saturated field i.e poker I find it hard to get started (or heard). But with what I have read here I will push for a focused and polished delivery on my topics.
