I was talking with a seo expert from this forum and he told me that he would rather prefer a domain with some traffic and not a good name instead of a domain with an awesome name and no traffic. Here's my question for you. When you want to buy a domain ... what are you looking for? Good name? Traffic? Page rank? Let's suppose you want to buy that domain for your website/blog/forum, you have no plans for parking it.
That would be perfect but let's suppose you have to choose one of that variants. Good name and no traffic or bad name and traffic. What would you choose?
Sometimes it's like love at first sight, and you end up buying something you didn't really need at that moment but you simply had to have it. On other occasions I operate more rationally and buy a name suited for a new project. A name with traffic is always better, but it has to suit the needs of the new project.
Good name for sure, unless it has no such extra ordinary charms. (Type of site, amount of traffic and of course most important is history(dignities)…etc) Yes ! Many times ! But,these are only domains !
I don't care about traffic or PR or anything like that when buying a name for a website. If you want to get serious and brand yourself and your site, you want a good domain name. People visit websites with good domain names; just look at the top Alexa/Technorati rankings. I suppose if you're just making a cheap content website or proxy or something than the name doesn't really matter so I guess a crap one with traffic would work fine.
I keep my eye open for expired and deleted domain names with the possibility for traffic, but I like to invest in quality premium domain names that are brandable and keyword-rich. You can always promote a domain name and get traffic going to it, but if www.bigbouybitefrog.com is getting 25,000 hits a day it's not a very brandable name.
Traffic is King in my book, but If i'm looking at a domain name, it has to make sense. It has to be proper english and preferably keyword rich, with words that relate to the project I'm undertaking. I'm not going to set up a website for pregnant women for example under jhd8in.com, no matter how cheap it is, or what traffic its getting (I'll be realistic and assume jhd8in.com is not getting hundreds of uniques a day!). Some names just jump out at me as must buys. Their always keyword rich and easy to remember. I think traffic is easier to build to these names rather than obscure ones. I'm not an expert on SEO, I'm sure there are loads of people here who could take jhd8in.com and turn it into one of the top 10 websites for pregnant women! But for me a domain name must bear some kind of semblance to the website, be memorable and have at least one keyword in it.
i think i will go for name then previous record, if name doesn't suit the content, visitor will just bounce out ........
i usually go for the name especially if its a name that i know the meaning of (healthcare-) which i know what technologies etc are on the horizon
I would select my own domain and register it through a registrar and I will not buy any unused and expensive domain w/o anything..
