I was just wondering if there are any smart DP'ers who can answer this question. Seems puzzling, is it because thats how it all started? or there is a scientific answer to it? Will it ever stop? what makes it spin? Why it spins? makes me wonder how complex universe is...

doesnt answer the question, I have studied Cosmology, wanted to know DP'ers view. I know how Google works.. but it doesnt give specific answer... the 2nd link seems to be good.. but i doubt any of them are correct answers, i m not sure since when human actually knew everything about Univerise...
ya i heard about it sometime few years ago when i was in physics class, something to do with that newtons law.. but its still puzzling question.. imagine earth stop spinning, law says its not possible but there is nothing impossible and when you dive into complexity of university everything that seems impossible becomes possible..
You would be surprised to know...that our Earth is indeed slowly slowing down rotating on its axis... Earlier, the spin was faster...i mean very fast for any things to remain stable on it.This meant that there were continuous storms...It gradually slowed itself down.... Theory says it will slow down a lot.....and before it becomes stand still....life would have long vanished..... As to your question, I have read somewhere, that Earth collided with other planetary object which made it spin on its axis... and the pull of the sun prevented it from spinning away into space. The mass of the earth is slowly acting on its spinning speed to slow it down..
wouldn't we all fly out at crazy speeds if it ever stops? I mean we wont be sitting on our seats enjoying tv or anything lol.. that is if it ever stops...
We will not fly away if earth stopped spinning... In fact, if earth did become stand still....the side exposed to Sun would eventually become very hot for life to sustain....and the side opposite to it would be freezing cold..again not conducive for life.... Regards, RightMan
It is the movement of Magma that actually causes the spinning to the best of my knowledge. That is also resultant of the Magnetic Fields.
The theory says that long ago when our solar system was new, we collided with a planet about the size of mars. Was no life on earth as the earth was still extremely hot (it took a very long time for earth to cool down). This theory also says that this is how we got our moon. When this mars sized planet hit earth, the rock from both earth and that smaller planet formed together creating the moon. I *guess* that is the impact that made our planet tilted. If the Earth wasn't tilted, we would not have the 4 seasons that we have today: summer, fall, winter and spring. We would have one temperature all year around. Which could be pretty nice!
I think if earth stops spinning, there will be disturbance in gravitational force, it will be universal chaos.... That would be end of the world...
