If you could take all the aspects of a good directory.. and also what you WOULD LIKE to see (ie: maybe not even developed yet) what would say would make the best directory? Design is obviously important, pagerank?, deep links--or even traffic instead? What is the key to a good directory for you?
content is king. Add content and people will link to you. Dont worry about building PR. Add unique content and people will help you along with that.
- Has content along with resources - Good editorial guidelines - Has good quality link inclusions - Provides Traffic - Good category structure - Family friendly appearance - Has natural backlinks to itself - Adding resources to correct category And many more...
They want quality, traffic,PR,etc for free. And if possible if you could do this it would be awesome. Anything is possible in these forums...
Hyper....India is a much less economically developed country than western europe/north america. Yes, they dont have as much money to spend and want things cheaper/for free but so what? Hire an american for web design. He may charge $2000. Hire an indian, he may charge $200. Thats why i often work with people from Asia as they do things for much less in order to gain more business. Their economy is much different, so the value of something in India is much less than it may be in the UK. Thats why they are able to charge lower prices and want things for lower in price too. A large proportion of the directory owners and webmasters on this forum are Indian/Asian - some of the best like coolweb/amitpatel/sizzler are all from india i think. Be careful what you say.
I'm from India.. and never run for free links.. Do you want to prove that people from your place never ask anything for free? Don't take every Indian in the same manner.. Always think before speaking something!
I think we should all be careful of categorizing different ethnic groups with specific actions or tendencies. People are people wherever they may be. Some good some bad. Some of the nicest people I have ever met have come from places you would never expect. Sorry about being off the original topic
Exactly seems pathetic that they think indians are dumb or something. The mentality of some people really shocks me these days, oh well another one goes on my "narrow minded cheap mentality list"
There are excellent indian webmasters in here, is true...,but I have my own experience with indian ppl and I was disappointed. Sorry for my offtopic replies, and for those who felt offended. Don't put words into my mouth man. I didn't said that, you said it. When it comes to quality, there is no "free", with very few exceptions. True that, but monitor the traffic on your website if you announce that your service is free...just for curiosity. Good point. Wish you all a happy new year
To me eveyone on the web looks green ( well in this forum anyway, sometimes they look blue ) Back on topic some good points above and will throw a few others up for consideration that are probably not seen. 1. Organisation in that to run a successful directory it must be very organised to allow all parts to flow, intergrate and in that allow for the fastest and most accurate way to get the information to the big screen. 2. Planning, that not only after startup but moving forward all planning is well thought out and are not 2 minute decissions based on knee jerk reactions that could lead you down the wrong path. 3. A pet hate of mine i see so often by people is customer service and to follow that up further i am refering to statements like post the right catagory, or post the right key word or else your auto deleted etc. Most people here know the ropes but i will bet london to a brick, if went down the local mall and asked every business to name the catagory / sub catagory for their business 50% or more would give a differing view as to mine, it does not make them wrong or dumb nor warrants any penalty just to many people with their heads up their backsides who would not know customer service if they fell over it. Yet these same people claim to be directory masters and in that the only thing they master is the update button and their paypal account password. 4. Value for money, i have seen many so called upper directories charging huge fees for what is nothing more than polished crap these people may get some suckers with their clossy cover and spill but reading through the rubbish they post it is easy to see their intentions. ( not saying people can't charge what they want just some are taking the mickey ) 5. Passion this is something you can not hang a label on as it is a unseen comodity, but some sites just speak pure dedication and a real passion or desire to put out a great directory. Foolish people will think that putting up a flashy front will catch flies ( only bull**** does that ) , the reality is todays customers are very clever they are more informed than ever and are less fooled than ever before. To be complaicent in regards to your customers needs and to disrespect their intelligence is going to cost you.
