    especially when there is no way for it to be an unofficial thing?

    If you have a product of your brand, then you have an official site for your product .

    If it is for a product/brand that you did not make yourself, then you must contact that person/company to be an authorized seller.

    To declare something official, the product or thing must be owned by you. If let's say you have a band, and are having a website, then this is your official website. Or if the government of canada declares an election in a press release, then it's "Official"

    Its official if you're the owner of the brand or are associated with the brand yourself..basically the brand is aware of your actions and is allowing you to do so..this makes your site official and you can use the necessary logos and information to emphasize on this fact..

    This is an excellent question and one to be wary of. If you type some things into google, 100 sites say they are the official page of so and so or official product of so and so. I would certainly take the advice that was already given here if your product or site is from another brand. If its a large brand, you could face trouble. If its your brand, your in already.
