I'm not sure if the term "authority site" is what I am referring to, but, what I want to know is, what makes certain directories or sites more worthy to have a link from? Like Yahoo directory and certain paid directories provide good links even if there is no page rank for that page you are on.

And why are there some directories that have stronger and worthier links than some other sites that have higher page rank. What makes these sites have more authority and link weight than others? And how do we effectively make our own sites an authority site or link worthy site?

    Any input would be great.

It's a combination of things....solid backlinks, quality content, aged domain, etc

The biggest factor is the quality and quantity of backlinks.
