What makes a good search engine?

What do you think makes a good search enigne?

 

Relevant search results.

Thinking of beating Google?

 

Complex algorithms. It seems like a simple question, but the answer is no so easy. There are hundreds of factors that go into deciding relevance, even when you don't put spam into the equation.

I mean, what keyword density would indicate that a page is likely to be useful, rather than a list of links to useful resources? How do you weight anchor text, and how important is the date of a document? Those are just a few of the questions, and a search engine that doesn't factor in hundreds of variables isn't going to come close to being able to figure out what a human would find useful.

 

Lot's of smexy results

 

One that gives you the results you need.

 

Quality results without all turnkey,duplicate,spam and spyware sites.

 

Display accurate results without displaying the site that using blackhat technique.

 

The domain being anything but Google

 

Google-its the fine answer.

 

Complex algos + fastness + accurate results (derived from the algos' complexity).
Google has it all.

 

Well most of the time

 

Ability to provide relevant results in a reasonable amount of time with the best possible user experience and the best possible user participation.

Google has 3 out of those 4.

All the other general requirements like scalability, reliability, etc also apply.

 

At the end of the day its relevancy without the spam that we all want.

Without question relevancy is #1. Why else do you search?

Being able to return relevant results has to be the most difficult part. I've tried many different search engines and I can think of only 2 that consistently return relevant results.

The way the results are displayed are important too. For example, Yahoo numbers their results which makes it easy to navigate.

 

Easily to navigate, user friendly.. Display excellent and informative results accurately....Faster downloading time...and Without many annoying pop-ups...

 

I prefer it when they have little screen shots of the site.

 

One word - google

It has it all. At least all that I need

 

Good results with no spam or MFA.
