Me and my friend are making a site (inspired by youtube lol) which will be basically the same, except with games, videos, pictures etc. alot of domain names are taken, and we have come up with a few but none of them are that related to what the site is about. what domain names would be good for a site like this? should it be related to the sites content?
no it should not be nesscary related with contents , but if its related to contents you may get some natural visits (provided that keyword is populor and not picked yet)
Try to keep it related to the site content..try to keep it as short as possible...but if that is not an option, make it catchy. Also check out the suggested names itag under the domain name lookup on sites like NorthBoard.com...that is where I get mine...these suggested names can sometimes be very useful. Also...try checking out sites like pool.com for names that are deleting or expireing...it will cost you $60.00 there at a minimum if you see one you might want. Under $8.00 at Northboard.com for .com names I believe. Good luck!!
I remember going through this process myself some 12 months ago, and I kept writing names down on a piece of paper. I knew I wanted a name that related to the site but that would be short and easy to remember. Eventually about 4 months later I came up with it and now everyone says the same thing "What a great name, how clever yet simple" but I tell you it took me months to come up with it!!!!
Yeah shorter names are definetly better, people will remember them easier. Try to find something unique and not to cliche to a video site.
SEOwise a good name includes the products you are selling, or the stuff you are promoting. A good two word .com with a page title of the same text is bound to get you a good SERP rating. But keep in mind that if you are going after saturated markets, you are probably up against some fierce if not impossible competition. Brandable names like Google have a lot of focus groups and research behind them. Yes, they differentiate themselves with a unique name, but its probably best to start out with common words.
First of all it should be memorable. Google, YouTube all these are different but memorable. If you can come up with something really unique and memorable then you will do well. My advice is to find a one which is memorable and tells what the site is about. webgaya.
A good name should definately be easy to spell and remember. If it contains key words that describe your business that is even better, but not totally necessary. A general rule I like to follow is to be able to tell someone your domain name over the phone and not have to spell it for them. Aviod words and characters like 4, for, you, u, 2, too, to etc. .... anything confusing that you would need to clarify. A great tool to use is http://www.nameboy.com (I'm not affiliated with them). You can use their tool to find a name and register it anywhere you want. This tool does get addictive though (-:
It's always good to have keywords in the domain related to the content. But, as we can all see... most any domain will do. But the keywords help. what about something like: mediatoob.com It's available http://whois.domaintools.com/mediatoob.com
