What makes a domain name premium?

After surfing some websites where domain names were being auctioned I came across many listings where users called their domain premium.
What defines a premium domain? I can understand how words can become premium domains but what makes a regular domain name premium?
Does it have to do with the tld or the length?

Except for some names which are universally premium, the criteria varies

Personally a premium domain for me is any name that has more than 1000 searches/day. But that is just my own criteria. There is http://www.premiumdomain.com where you can enter your domains and see if their system recognises it as premium but I see this as just a guide. Like all automated systems it is not infallible.
