The main thing imho is that it should have a lerge number of listings and stay updated. Directories turn from free to paid and vice versa or even disappear all the time. It's a lot of work to keep a directory up to date.

I would like to see better categorization for niche directories. Getting stuck in between all the general sites on another directory of directories has led to many of my non-topic submissions. And I wouldn't think it's all that helpful SEO wise.

I would also like to see some sort of way to categorize general sites. Don't neccesarily have an idea, but many of the d of d sites simply list them all in one category. Maybe group by month submitted or something? That way submittors would know where to look?

Ok, i've had this idea for a long time already, way way back then, but couldnt have the resources nor time to get it done. To have number of backlinks, pr and pages cached to be displayed next to all directories, and a way to sort them by pr, pages or backlinks. Something like iwebtool's link market place but for directories

I agree, it would be nice to have those features.

I rescently updated http://netdung.com a DoD based on it's PR values. On this update it din't take much work to update it since I only have 9 categories to edit and a little over 100 directories listed on the site so far, but when it gets really big I think it would be a challenge, but I look forward to the challenge when that time comes.

pretty much agree on what you guys have said above. But I think the most important things is the maintenance.

I often bump into directories that are not described at a directory of directories. For example, listed under free dirs are no longer free any more. Or paid dirs got different price, etc.

So keeping the update is the most important thing. Other than that, I think a large list of dirs, categorized by paid, free, or niche would do it.

Also, a good search function would be nice. So that people can get a list by price, pr, and so on.

Alphabetical order has a plus and a minus to it. It encourages people to register stuff like

I think the directory can have categories based on pagerank. (e.g. PR10 directories, PR9 Directories...)

You're right, it takes a lot of work. I make up to 80 changes a day.

If anyone has any suggestions for Directory Critic PM me. I am doing both frontend and backend upgrades at the moment so now would be a perfect time to make some more user friendly changes.

Yeah, I have just gone thru my listings and many of the directories are no longer directories. They come and go quick.

But that can be justified by the owner based on their acceptance standards. :)
