just hooked an old outdated computer I just got for free up, and it's making a whstling sound. Sound doesn't seem to effect performance or anything though
got the case off. One of the fans is making a small noise but the whistling seems to be coming from the hard drive
When the computer is turned off, remove the cabinet's casing. Turn the computer back on and if the whistling is still present, you can look inside to see what's causing the problem. If you can't or have never removed the CPU casing before, you can look up some free guides like this one: helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/remove-case-covers.htm Or, you could take it to a computer store and have them check it for you. They usually won't charge you anything hoping they gain you as a repeat customer but even if they do ask for money, it probably won't be much. Cheers EDIT: Ok just saw your latest post. From your saying it's an old computer, I'm sure you can pick up a cheap, used HD from a computer store and get the system back in shape.
well it might be a HD is pretty easy to replace, you'll need to reinstall the OS though. You can find a 40 gig HD for next to nothing anymore, and if it's just for internet and email, maybe a few programs, a 40 gig should be plenty I suggest checking out "ubuntu" if you need to add a new OS It comes with a browser, a photo editing program, a office app and a few other helpful programs all Free
yea I know how to change them, just haven't done if it a while. Is there a way to tell if it's going out or not? MAybe something I can try to quiet it down for now? I'm an xp lover
