What level of image resolution should I use?

I'm just messing around doing the graphic design part of my future website, and I am just wondering what is the best image quality/number of pixels I should be using? From what I have read, most computer users view on monitors set at 800 x 600 pixels. It seems like the text in the images comes out kind of fuzzy, so I'm wondering if higher resolution will help, and yet I also want the site to load fairly quickly and not be running off the screen. Any advice?

I think 1024x768 is the most widely used resolution nowadays.

and you only need the images you are using in the site to be 72dpi. screen has a smaller fixed dpi compared to print when you are scaling things up to 300+dpi.
