What legal protection do you gain with a Trademark?

    ...other than noone else can technically use it in their logo's, etc. I would liek to purchase one (general characters if that makes a difference) and want to see how far the legal protection goes on these things. I'm goign to register it to my name, not a business (atleast for now...).
