What Keywords would you target?

I have a new blog that provides personal financial advice to college students. What key words would you target for SEO? There's too much competition for student loans, financial aid, credit cards, cheap textbooks, student travel, etc. Any ideas?

How about "financial tips for students" ? why don't you try key phrases rather than keywords.

Yes. I thinks its better to choose key phrases or long tail keywords for your contents. As your topic show its a collection of more things so phrase keywords fits your bog accurate.

Use GKWT to find some. Put in min/max searches (local or global, depending upon your target markets) to find low-volume keywords and then do some research to see what the competition is like. (Competition in GKWT is about advertisers, not SEO.)

They will be LTKWs, but a good way to start and build up from there to an authority (if that's your aim).

If you can't work out with the main keywords, pursue your product keywords. and then ater that use some long tail keywords.

The way I do it is to put your main keyword in Google keyword tool on broad search and then note all the related phrases that will be shown. Then just drill down those results using exact match and see if you can hit your target searches/competition.
