i have a site about college admissions. but i don't know what keywrods to target. all the ones that i think of are either not frequently searched, or pays $0.01 per click, or both.

can someone be kind to me? :)

What you're targetting right now are pretty good, just try to optimize for better keywords - maybe 'College guide' might help, not sure.

Also when you tweak your page towards a particular type of keyword to show up in adsense.

Go over to the DP adsense sandbox tool and put your url in.

Then you can see exactly what type of ads will show up. And remove some of the guess work :)

    Works wonders.

It has to be a 3x3 matrix with competition vs weighted market analysis. See the document under my signature. Invest where you get high returns.

    There are three phases,
    1) Discovery of keyphrases,
    2) Investment (be smart here)
    3) ROI for keyphrases

    Hope document explains it further.

i did that, and i'm getting the type of ads i was expecting. :) expecting here meaning i've seen competitors' sites showing those ads. i typed in every page that i've finished, into the sandbox and they all show me the same ads.

Your targeting keyword should be American college (Locality),Admissions Guide(very usefull for your domain),College Admissions,(your main keyword).

    Search for there ROI.

thanks rajput and intruth. i'm targeting those words on certain pages.

interesting tidbit: I checked my referral and discovered that people who found my site through MSN are looking for "How To Get Into College" (47%) and "How to get into a good college" (24%). Hence the new h1 text in my site. :D

keyword selection is based on analysis. First u have to analys the theam of the site, then analys yor competitor.

once u analyze ur and ur competitors site, decide a few keywords.
now go through the list of high paying keywords(Google it)
select the best now and use them in optimum density

1)If your writing post on "How to hack yahoo"..Just type these keywords in google search.
2)Try to extract first 7 websites ...and keep in notepad..
3)Major step: Open the post of your competitor website and paste whole content in wordcounter.com....This is my favorite website. It tells keyword freq for each and every word.
4)Keep all those keywords in a seperate notepad..
5)Now try to write content which should be higher freq then your competitor websites..
6)Place keywords in right positions..Wordpress helps you this step......
I can say you will not get this method anywhere.........This is my own method..
My each and every post is in google first page..

    Apply On Page Optimization
The process of keyword research involved several phases

1.Brainstorming - Thinking of what your customers/potential visitors would be
likely to type in to search engines in an attempt to find the
    information/services your site offers .

    2. Surveying Customers - Surveying past or potential customers is a great
way to expand your keyword list to include as many terms and phrases as
possible. It can also give you a good idea of what's likely to be the biggest
traffic drivers and produce the highest conversion rates.

    3. Applying Data from KW Research Tools - Several tools online (including
Wordtracker & Overture - both described below) offer information about the
number of times users perform specific searches. Using these tools can offer
concrete data about trends in KW selection.

    4. Term Selection - The next step is to create a matrix or chart that analyzes
the terms you believe are valuable and compares traffic, relevancy and the
likelihood of conversions for each. This will allow you to make the best
informed decisions about which terms to target.

    5. Performance Testing and Analytics - analytics programs (like Indextools and
ClickTracks) that measure web traffic, activity and conversions can be used to
    further refine keyword selection.
