Yes Google Keyword Planner is good for finding the search volumes of keywords but you need other tools to evaluate how easy those keywords are to rank and so on.

I use LongTailPro and TrafficTravis (like to get more than one opinion) and also some manual research like looking at the SERPS.

TrafficTravis has an unlimited free version you can use forever. It's quite good for a free tool but obviously has limited features though everything ypu need to do works.

Google keyword planner but only for checking search volumes. No tool out there will show you the best keywords to target though, your own brain has to do that.

Thumbs Up for Ultimate Niche Finder. This comes handy and feel better than Google Keyword Planner.

I had written a post about this somewhere on here, you can probably search for it. But your best bet is a hybrid of your own brain and googles keyword planner. IF what your wanting to do is come up with creative relevant keywords.

So say I want to create a website about Volkswagens.
If I put Volkwagen into the kwp I get suggestions like:
    I get terms back like
    Volkswagen for sale
    used volkwagen
    beetles for sale

The KWP doesnt really think outside of the box. So If I want to make a better site, I would create a page for each model volkswagen makes (which wasn't returned in the kwp results) so make a page like Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen Passat, Volkswagen Eos. Then I would niche down more with pages like - Volkswagen Jetta Reviews, Volkswagen Jetta TDI Fuel Efficiency, or even Volkswagen Jetta aftermarket parts.

I hope this is somewhat clear for you, but you want to get your BROAD idea from the KWP then do a little research with the results to think up some of your own keywords.

Volkswagen for sale is going to be MUCH harder to rank for than Volkswagen Jetta TDI Fuel Efficiency

Hope this helps. If you have any questions shoot me a reply or check out that other post I made somewhere on here.

Yeah I'll give another vote for marketSamuai - one of the best best paid tools on market. For free tools you can not beat google's keyword planner.
