Not all reciprocal links are bad, but some are considered a linking scheme which is a violation of Google's Webmaster Guidelines and can result in penalty.

Reciprocal links to related sites that provide your visitors and the visitors at the other site benefits by pointing out related, relevant resources is fine and would likely always withstand a manual review by a Googler if you were every reported via a spam report. The fact that both sites gain SEO benefits from it is irrelevant as long as it the reciprocating URLs are relevant to one another and provide some type of benefit to visitors of both sites.

Reciprocal links with a totally unrelated site that does not provide any obvious benefits to visitors of both sites and exist for the SOLE purpose gaining SEO benefits are a violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and will likely NOT withstand a manual review by a Googler in the event that you are reported via a spam report and they manually review your site. Should such a review occur both URLs will likely suffer a penalty.

A baby toy site reciprocal linking to an online gambling site and visa versa would be an example of a reciprocal link that would likely result in the linking URLs (and possibly both sites) being penalized if you get reported and Google manually reviews the two sites.

A baby toy site reciprocal linking to a baby clothes site would be an example of a reciprocal link that would likely be considered relevant and NOT result in any type of penalty should you get reported and Google manually reviews the two sites.

The determining factor as to whether a reciprocal link is good or bad in Google's eyes is generally whether the sites are relevant to one another.

And whatever you do, do NOT put any kind of messaging on your site to the affect of, "Email us about reciprocal links.", "Contact us about exchanging links." or "Link to us and we'll link to you." This is just BEGGING to get reported and penalized.

PS: There is a right and wrong way to implement reciprocal linking. Having a "links" page on your site is the wrong way to do it. Why would anyone want a bunch of inbound links to http://www.example.com/links.html? It's only going to serve to make your links page rank.

IMO the correct way to implement reciprocal links is to find a page on the other site that is relevant to the URL on your site that you are trying to rank for a particular keyword phrase. Get them to place a link on that page you've identified (which is relevant) using your targeted link text and pointing to the URL on your site that you want to rank for the keyword phrase used as the link text. Ideally these would be contextual links in the content of the other site's relevant page.

Then you should find a page on your site that is relevant to the other site's URL that they want to rank for a particular keyword phrase. On your relevant page place a link (preferably contextual) pointing to their URL with their targeted link text.

I wouldn't mind giving a link back to a site that is relevant to my own. I would never rec link with a directory though. Just doesn't make sense.

See how reciprocal linking has affected johnchow.com. He used to link back to people if anyone linked to hime using the term MAKE MONEY ONLINE. (reciprocal linking activity here). Google saw this and slapped him tight. I am not saying that reciprocal linking is bad but if google finds reciprocal linking then the weightage of the link goes down.

Doing reciprocal link exchanges wouldn't harm you for as long as you only exchange with relevant and quality sites. Avoid link farms.

In my experience, reciprocal links means link exchange and if it is linked to relevant websites, it’s better for you sites. Natural links is the best

they have less rank than one way links - but a well-anchored backlink is always useful whether its a reciprocal [relevant] or oneway .just the importance in the eyes of google vary.

Google's guidelines on reciprocal linking say they are against EXCESSIVE use of this and cases where link schemes are set up purely to gain pagerank - ie pages which say "link to us and we'll link to you", and huge directories of recip links on site which have no connection to the subject matter.

Having said that I still see many sites, particularly in smaller niches, which still dominate the SERPs from reciprocal links.

My advice would be don't throw it out completely, it's one of many weapons in your armoury, and can be hugely effective - however:

    - do it in moderation - it only becomes a problem when the majority of your backlinks are reciprocals
    - stay on-topic - try to target sites that are relevant to your niche
    - dont advertise reciprocal linking too obviously - have a resources page but dont say that you are willing to exchange links with just anyone as long as they link to you. at the very least mention that you have an editorial policy on linking and specify the criteria.
    - link out to authority sites in your industry (trade associations, wikipedia, university pages on the topic, etc) on your links pages alongside your recip links
    - do it manually - hand pick sites which are on topic, where the links page has a decent pagerank (or flow of pagerank - ie its linked to from the site navigation) and contact them with an exchange offer. automated recip linking schemes are far more likely to be penalised.

    hope that's useful!

Excessive reciprocal links are considered bad. Read through the Google webmaster guidelines. They recommend that people NOT participate in link building schemes, such as reciprocal links or link exchanges designed to build up page rank.

A few reciprocal links are ok. But do not over do it.

Personally, I never do link exchanges or reciprocal links. I have 3 sites on related topics. So only I do three way links. Meaning, if someone will link to my site A. I will link to their site from my B or C site. This looks more natural to search engines.

And one way links are much better then link exchanges or reciprocal links.

It is beneficial if you will link to a related website. Also, over doing it is not good at all.
