What is your honest opinion of the advertising industry, online, and off? Feel free to rant, I just want to listen. Nothing to be debated, just your honest opinion.

When done right its an amazing thing. If you are interested in such things you should really track down a copy of Art and Copy. Its totally amazing. Well to me at least. No one should be allowed to do any sort of advertising, marketing or SEO with out watching it first.

It should not be too hard to find ;)

TV ads - sometimes amusing, especially some foreign ads I have seen (Brazilian ones, I think). The crap I get through my letterbox - misleading spam (and recently one of them - Virgin Media - got their wrists slapped). In the papers - who reads those now?! Online - some are just full of lies or are just annoying. I don't really care for sponsored posts/advertorials.

Like Nigel said though when it's done right it can be great. I think about some of the stuff I have seen for Google Glass and it makes me want to buy! I'm more likely to research a product/company further if they amuse/interest me and don't just try to shovel their sh*t in my face. (Awaiting a funny comment from @Spoiltdiva. :p)

This whole series was brilliant http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkB9OT2XVvA/

Which spawned this craziness actually http://www.brandchannel.com/home/post/petite-lap-giraffe.aspx

Too bad the site is not up any longer petitelapgiraffe.com

You used to be able to watch a web cam that would have one walk into the shot every once in a while. You know you have rocked shit when this happens.

Not what I was seeking. More interested in your opinion of the industry itself.

This thread is definitely not about who makes the best ads either.

It's purely opinion time of the industry as a whole.

Advertising is incredibly powerful and influential, especially TV ads. When done right, with the right product, and the right intentions...its fantastic. When done wrong, with a bad product/idea, and deceitful intentions....it can change the societal zeitgeist...literally. I.E. Goebbels and the 3rd Reich. :/

    Hello,

Having been in advertising/marketing for 27 years one area I have seen has changed, but businesses have not yet caught on to this change is how to budget for their advertising.

The Internet has creating a distinct difference between the marketing process and the advertising tasks. Marketing with a shelf life of years on the web has to be looked at from a investment into the business and budget allocated accordingly. Advertising on the web has no residual effects. When the dollars stop, so do the ads and the traffic. For this reason, advertising needs to be looked at as an expense.

Having said that the advertising industry has changed quite a bit since the financial meltdown. Advertising agencies in general do not like to recommend marketing tools which may benefit the client if they are not able to make their 15% on it. For this reason, marketing processes are not pursued (especially organic marketing, which tends to be labor intensive). Rather advertising, which is less labor intensive, is the recommendation in most cases. Google Adwords is a thorn with most agencies because they do not get their 15% agency discount, rather they have to add to the top of the advertising budget or they have to take funds away from the Adwords campaign.

Anyway, I could keep rambling on this topic. Hope this was along the lines of what you were looking for.

    Hi,

I have been in Marketing & sales since last 10 years & the preferred methods keep changing ALL the time.

Few years back, calling someone & closing a deal was as easy as walking on a cake & then came email marketing, which benefited several businesses too & now its SMO ( Facebook, twitter etc)

Not to forget that there are TV ads, print media etc but when compared to online medium, they turn out to be VERY expensive.

I personally feel that online marketing has created a platform where small business can also plan & promote themselves. There are reliable directories, online shops etc to help reach out to their potential clients... so its very nice & encouraging.

Online Marketing has brought the revolution & has benefited so many businesses. With all the buzz around, I am always eager to see WHAT's NEXT? :)

A substantial part of my income is derived from the world of advertising. I never post on Advertising forum as I come to DP to decompress and unwind. But here I am, so will keep this short as I could write 20,000 words on this topic.
There are trends in advertising, the flavor of the month is now humor. You will have noticed in the last 2 years how ads on t.v., radio and the net make you laugh? Endorphines are released when you laugh, therefore causing the consumer to be in a more receptive frame of mind...to buy, get it?;)
The advertising world is trying to become a more gentler, kinder place. (a more profitable kinder, gentler place)
