What is Your Opinion of Digg-Like Sites and how would they fare?

I know this sounds kinda vague, but I've seen digg-like sites popping up all over the place.

I dont mind shoutwire. I wonder about the viability of such sites.

Can they succeed?

They probably could if they didn't focus on technology. What do you think?

digg is great but whats the point in copying it when it is not doing anything wrong? its like the hundreds of milliondollarpixel sites around - one was OK but why would we need loads of them?

If you could find a niche then a digg site could work ok as long as people in the niche were the sort who would use the site.

 

I stick with Digg and Shout, all the others don't seem to get too much traffic right now.

 

From the looks of them, I would say they are owned by the same person. Anyone know?

I like their shows , watched all of them.

 

They just seem to similar to be clones. Most copy cats dont take the time to make them exactly alike in look and functionality. I would think if the didn't have the same owner, there would be some violations.

I once posted an article on digg and shoutwire but if your looking to make money it's not worth submitting. Cause they don't click it, it only uses alot of bandwith.

 

Recently there was a ruckus with the Digg community and Steve Mallett, O'Reilly Network editor and blogger. A Digg story was posted that accused Mallett of stealing Digg code, and what it turned out to be was he didn't steal it, but was using open source code that was derived from a Digg clone that in fact did copy Digg css files.

It all depends on your site.

 

On the second day of launching my http://www.blogreporter.biz i got 800+ uniques. So im sure a few posters got some nice hits. Its still in beta and im planning to change most of the code to move away from digg.

If it works for you and those who submit stories... Why not?

 

My opinion was on my blog, did you submit a blog or just a regular website?

 

Digg is great for exposure, but it depends on your story whether it's going to help you or not. We've had about 35 stories dugg, about 8 of which were a major success, while some of the others didn't get more than a few diggs from friends.

Mine was a regular website and the day it made it to the front page it made around $200 instead of its usual $10.

My experience was bad. Well my post was about a USB Coffee Warmer (no one is gonna click on that topic)

Got 2400 pageloads from shoutwire and other sites that began linking to my post.

Made 11 cents

Now I do think if the post was on a different topic I would have gotten more money.

I am giving this a try. This will be a good test because I choose a new site, with the result it has limited traffic. I agree with some of the earlier comments about the potential for niche applications for this kind of thing. Unfortunately, some of the niches I like to occupy are full of very reluctant participants. However, I think given the right set of issues, it may be possible to bring them alive.

I had around 2.60 $ , which was nice for a test with an article on my blog.

 

I've been on the front page of digg twice. Both my articles were quality articles about computer hardware, and they had very catchy titles. One of them referenced building a computer cheaper than you could rent a hooker. I wish I remembered who the guy that came up with that was, he'd be a good copywriter

My CTR was great. for about 6 days my revenue from that one page was about $32 a day. That may not sound like a lot, but from a single page on a single site, that's a nice bonus.

The general consensus is that diggers don't click. But my experiences were very different.

As for cloning digg, it's anyones guess. There's too many variables involved. The reason digg does so well and themilliondollarhomepage did so well is because they were unique. You will be much better off just developing something unique than ripping off someone else.

I was thinking about integrating a shout like blog system after all the anti-blog setiment on digg and shoutwire.
