A combinaton of all of the above is still the best strategy. Just make sure you aren't placing your link on spam websites, but you can't go wrong with different strategies.

Honestly, some of my best backlinks have come from me simply posting a blog post good enough that other sites have linked back to mine. Other than that, blog comments and social networking sites have been a good source of traffic, although many of them are no-follow.

One of the best way to have a good backlink is using ezinearticles for sure. Just write couple articles then wait :)

Ive always relied on blog commenting coupled with article submission. The best way to promote your website through articles is to write a top notch article on a specific niche based article directory. Once, it is accepted build up 4-5 backlinks for the article and you should see it give you a PR2/PR3 high PR backlink with the only outbound link pointing to your blog by the next update.

i agree with most, commenting on forums and article marketing have been my best methods. I've left a few answers at Yahoo Questions, and haven't really seen a lot of traffic from ir.

I think that the provocative content will lead the traffic and back link for your blog.

Sure. Usually, you don't buy text link ads for the direct traffic you receive from it. You buy text link ads for the SEO benifits you would receive.

This is WAY oversimplified, but, if you're site is a PR0, it will generally receive pretty low results on SERPs (search engine result pages). Buy a text link ad or two on a couple of quality PR4 pages, and the next PR update, your site is not a PR2 or PR3. That will drastically bump your listings up in the SERPS, giving you more organic traffic.

Any direct traffic you get is an added bonus.

This is a subject I'm very interested in because I'm in the process of building backlinks to my new-ish blog.

One strategy I'm using is to target a handful of the bigger blogs which share the same audience that I am aiming for. Same goes with forums.

I aim to post, at least, 3 blog comments and 3 forum comments a day- if possible. Not to say I just post something for the sake of posting but I do aim to post comments which are meaningful and add to the conversation.

IMO blog commenting can bring you links but most of them don't hold any weight so the links will normally be useless.

the best method is analyzing your top competitors links, and then try to get the same links. that is the first thing you should do, links are the biggest factor in rankings, of course there are other factors, like content, age.. but if you can get the same links as the website which is #1, then you are set for top 3 rankings too, it's as simple as that.

I think the #1 source is ezines. Not only do you get a high page rank back link but the traffic is great and the article you write give you a lot of "link juice" because its a relevant article. 2nd place would be squidoo.

    I vote article submissions!

There are many advantages of article submissions, for example, it can increase the number of backlinks of your website and your website get indexing in the Search Engines more frequently as compared to before.

    Cheers!:)
