One of the reasons why I ill probably remain single from here on out. Women are plentiful and will always be around for me to pick and choose. besides, I have my 'friends' and not only am I a directory owner, I am also a client too. see here hahahaha. keep it fun, keep it safe ;)

It's not a "final solution", but I just wrote a mod for PLD v2.xx that requires link submitters to click a confirmation link that is emailed to them before their link is placed in the Pending Review queue. This way at least you know that the submitter is using a valid email address to which they have access. At least it'll take spammers a little time to write/modify a script to check their email address and autoclick the confirmation links. You can read more about it here: http://www.after5webdesign.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=194&sid=5c1d4c579e44600a0b8f305462cecd06

Yea i dont like the spam but I just deal with it. I added an adding check and recip link that defaults to the button, but it only helped a little. I banned one IP because it was sending me 200 junk ones a day. I am at about 200 junks and maybe 3 good ones..haha..
And I dont want to add the captcha because it causes trouble for the real people. Hard to read from what I read.

I like the idea, this will slow the spam a litle bit, until they update their bots.
I still like the idea of "paid first then submit" for paid directories, I think this is one of final solution that can handle all spam.

I have another good one that will yet another layer of protection coming shortly too. :)

I'm sorry that people have been getting hit with the auto submitters, but we will soon make their life pretty difficult. :)

For auto submitters, is the captcha image is not strong enough ?
I though captcha image could handle auto submitters or bots.

Tell us which methods you have used so far, you may have missed something. There are several methods of blocking spam, and each will effectively cut down a proportion of it.

No, it isn't, it can be cracked by a bot. You should be using a text captcha, which has the advantage of being fully accessible to human users. If your script doesn't provide this, get a better script.

Your second line of defence is the word filter. Look for words and phrases in the domain name, title and the description text for things you have banned in your guidelines. So if you don't allow gambling links you can be pretty sure that anything with "casino" in the title or url will be spam. You might need to take a different line with the title text, compared with the description: generally, you can be more strict about what you allow in the title.

Finally, you will need to ban specific IPs, emails, and domains. Quite a high proportion of spam comes from IPs starting with 59, 202 and 203.

I barely have any spam. One reason is because I noticed all of the spammers have a certain patern. Like they always add the same symbols or phrase in their submission. Even though they change up their url and IP they always have something else that is always exactly the same. I created a script that automatically blocks a listing if it contains the unique text that spammers use and it works.

I had this problem on apexurls.com & got roughly 1000 spam submissions a day about tramdol(sp?), viagra etc & i hate captures so i just let it continue & then deleted them, but in the end i got fed up & solved the problem in a very simple way, i just changed my submission URL since then i have no spam submission & the bot(s) are still looking & trying to access the old submission URL...

Most spam is done by bots that are setup to find the most common script URL's, just change yours believe me it helps:)
