    I've never used the keyword tools for research purpose (deciding purpose) but i use it for analyzing the competition. Till now i have used only one tool i.e. Google Adwords keyword tool.

    I first used the Google Adwords tool after reading Ultimate Guide to Google Ad Words, 2nd Edition: How To Access 100 Million People in 10 Minutes by Perry Marshall and Bryan Todd. It came with a $25 coupon to try Google A words so I gave it a try. Pretty good user interface and the research for keywords is free.

    Adwords tool only tells you CPC and advertiser competition. I use this and Traffic Travis.
