We all have 2 ears and 1 mouth and I think that's for a reason. Monitoring tools are among my favorite no matter what industry I'm in. Knowing what news agencies, blogs, forums, micro-blogs and wikis are saying about my industry or business have always proved to be crucial. I've tested out many of the pay-for monitoring tools but I have to say my favorites are Social Mention and NetVibes (they just had a new release that is pretty spectacular). Anybody else have a favorite alert/monitoring tool?

For Internet Marketing purposes I would say search engine marketing tools, social media tools as well as search engine optimisation are all just as good.
Ypu can use social networking sites, SpyFu for spying on competition, monitoring and analysis tools for SEO, link building tools. There are so many options!

If to talk about marketing tools, then SEO Quake FF plugin, gives lots of useful information about any site. I am surprised no one mentioned Google Analytics, it sure can be treated as a marketing tool.

Depends on how you define "tool". Personally, I think anything short of high rankings in the organic search results is a compromise. So with me, it's not so much a question of what 'tool' but what method--which inevitably leads to a discussion of SEO.
