What is wrong with google?

    I get this:
50% of the time after making two searches in the raw or searching for something past page one. This is really annoying.

Does anyone else get this more than usual?

Not more than usual but I have seen that recently - I was searching for a phpBB MOD though and Google will sometimes throw that up for certain keywords like phpBB (ever since Santy et al.).

    What were your search terms?

I don't think it has anything to do with actual virii or spyware. There is none on my system and I've seen that Google page recently.

Someone elsewhere here at DP suggested that Google doesn't have a generic error page and they just throw this one up whenever any error occurs. I can't say I know that to be true but I suppose it's possible - it may be that the servers were extra busy or that something else went awry.

My experience was that just refreshing the page gave me the actual Google search results... so it seemed to be a momentary thing whatever it was.

    Nothing is wrong.

Sometime ago there was a Worm that affected PHPBB forums (I think it was the Santy or something like that). Every infected machine used Google to search for other PHPBB forums and try to infect them too. Google blocked the search for terms like "forum", "viewtopic", etc. in order to stop this worm for reaching more and more systems.

That's true to a point, alephito -- that and similar exploits were when Google first created that page.

However, it appears that recently there are several reports of that page appearing for other search terms and, as noted above, if you simply refresh the page you'll usually see the error page disappear to be replace by the actual search results page.

In this case, the URL mentioned is a vBulletin forum. I just repeated that search now and got no error page.

I doubt this is the case. I now see other people complaining about these errors, searching for various terms... hmmmm

    How odd.

Do you have the Google toolbar installed? If so, go into options and try searching on google.com instead of google.co.uk and see if you still get the error.

I wonder if the message is coming from specific datacenters or servers. It may be that the current crop of circulating viruses is creating extra load on Google...

if you have broadband or dsl try to get a different ip. Its possible someone with your ip address or at your isp has been scraping the crap out of google. Depending on what kind of modem/router you have you can do a release/renew pretty easy.

I have changed my proxy and some of the errors went. I still get them though... hmmmm probably NTL again. I even had a member on my forum at one point with my ip address.

If nothing else, unplug the power for the modem/router setup, and power it back up during prime-time surfing hours for your area. The likelyhood that you will receive a seldom-used IP by re-connecting while everyone else is already connected is very good.
