VPN - Virtual private network ... Allows users to connect to the inside of your network from remote locations via a secure tunnel over an unreliable connection... like the internet. So if you work for a company and travel to remote client locations, you can use the client's internet connection and VPN into your main company's network to access secure resources. The VPN server manages these connections. Hope that helps.

Virtual private networks are point-to-point connections across a private or public network such as the Internet. A VPN client uses special TCP/IP-based protocols, called tunneling protocols, to make a virtual call to a virtual port on a VPN server. In a typical VPN deployment, a client initiates a virtual point-to-point connection to a remote access server over the Internet. The remote access server answers the call, authenticates the caller, and transfers data between the VPN client and the organization’s private network.

Not to be confused with a VPS, which is a hosted virtual private server. Essentially, dedicated hosting from a virtually hosted machine (a virtually hosted machine is one that runs concurrently on a single box with other VPS instances). Like different virtual machines, if you're familiar with Java.

A virtual private network (VPN) is a network that uses primarily public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or traveling users access to a central organizational network.

VPNs typically require remote users of the network to be authenticated, and often secure data with encryption technologies to prevent disclosure of private information to unauthorized parties.

VPNs may serve any network functionality that is found on any network, such as sharing of data and access to network resources, printers, databases, websites, etc. A VPN user typically experiences the central network in a manner that is identical to being connected directly to the central network. VPN technology via the public Internet has replaced the need to requisition and maintain expensive dedicated leased-line telecommunication circuits once typical in wide-area network installations.

VPN comes handy when you want to connect with your computer from a remote location. While you are working from home or from office, it is easy to share or access the files and devices contained or installed in other computers within the network.
However, the problem arises when you are at some other place and want to access your connected to your home or office network. Not always do you require the help of a
VPN service provider in such a case; you can create your own virtual private network with a little bit of knowledge.

You create a virtual private network yourself by using certain effective services available in the market, some of these include:

    • LogMeIn (Previously known as Hamachi)
    • Comodo Unite Previously known as EasyVPN)
    • Gbridge

First of all thing should be clear here between a VPN Connection/ Server and VPS. Both have different work criteria. Let me throw some light about what is VPN.

Virtual Private Network are computer networks that use protected accessibility the company through public telecom structure. The objective is to sustain the protection of information indication in and out of the intranet while being affordable at the same time, this network is triggered by a process known as ‘tunneling’.

A VPN is generally a professional form of intranet which happens to be code a secured site recommended for the use of office workers only while this is more like esteem computer giving.

The virtual private network (VPN) technology included in Windows Server 2003 helps enable cost-effective, secure remote access to private networks. VPN allows administrators to take advantage of the Internet to help provide the functionality and security of private WAN connections at a lower cost. In Windows Server 2003, VPN is enabled using the Routing and Remote Access service. VPN is part of a comprehensive network access solution that includes support for authentication and authorization services, and advanced network security technologies.

Site-to-site VPN connections (also known as router-to-router VPN connections) enable organizations to have routed connections between separate offices or with other organizations over a public network while helping to maintain secure communications. A routed VPN connection across the Internet logically operates as a dedicated WAN link. When networks are connected over the Internet, as shown in the following figure, a router forwards packets to another router across a VPN connection. To the routers, the VPN connection operates as a data-link layer link.
