One of my friend's site in google search says : "This site may be compromised"
I checked in google and it says that maybe the site is hacked or otherwise compromised. I guess his server was hacked once but the site is intact, so does that mean he should change his server soon as possible ?

I had that happen. The shared server I was on got hacked and my site had a virus / trojan loaded on it. Thus google attached that to it.
You can change to a different server/host. Or just clean the mess and fix (have the host fix) any server holes. If you are on an old version of wordpress etc... update it.
Heres more on how to remove the "This site may be compromised" once you get it cleaned:

Once you’ve reverted the compromise and – hopefully – taken steps to prevent this from happening again, you can submit a normal reconsideration request through Webmaster Tools.

    Hope this helps!

Yes that was helpful, the site has been cleared from this issue now. Just a thought, is it advisable to link to such sites, if they show a message in google search about the being compromised.

This is a typical hack attack that is done on CMSs with security hole.

Someone has injected a code in your website that contains malicious code (which is why Google has banned you)

Wordpress or Joomla or Drupal are too secure and loop holes only appear when you add plugins that are not checked for security.

    1. Remove all plugins for now else be ready for being attacked again. A hacker checks for its hacked domains again to feel proud. It will keep on hacking till you are secure enough.

    2. Install CMS Security plugins (some of them are good and available)

    3. Always keep a backup of content. There are some auto-backup plugins in Wordpress and Joomla.

    4. If your website is critical... always keep atleast 3 copies of your copy ready which you can switch whenever there is an attack

    5. Hire a expert (last resort) to secure your website

This might happen if your site is on a shared hosting. The server may be infected by virus(es) or part of it may be hacked thus the server may provide a trapdoor to enter into the backend of your website. So google should have added to a string to all websites coming from that particular server.

Ya, somebody has hacked the server and added some kind of malicious script. Have them contact their host.
