One way link is always better than reciprocal. Normally we always should seek quality link on the theme website. If you directories then try to give backlinks on a third party domain. It is called 3 way link.
Reciprocal link building is a mutual agreement. You are requesting some site owner (obviously relevant) to add your link on his website & in the return you will add his link on your website. This has now became obsolete because Google is not preferring the link building process.

Reciprocal links are good. But, one way links are better than any other. One or three way links provide better result than any other. Try to make one way or three way links.
