Digital cameras store EXIF data in pictures that include embedded thumbnail previews.
So even if you crop the picture in an editor, the EXIF data can still be in the picture.

Normally when you save a picture for the web it's EXIF data is stripped from it.
But for some reason, that data was left intact in the photo above.

A famous example of this occurring is with TechTV's Cat Schwartz when she had posted
cropped photos of herself on the web, but the EXIF data contained full pics of her topless. :D

Yup. Here's the original thumbnail stored in the EXIF data for those that can't see it.

The reason is quite simple actually.

The JPEG picture format has place in the file structure to put in Metadata. This data can be of many types ex- EXIF data that contains when the pic was taken and by what camera etc. ALSO the metadata can contain a data field called THUMBNAIL, now this data is nothing but the Preview Image of the whole image Embeded into the picture. This is done so that applications can rapidly display the thumbnails without having to go through the whole image (which can pretty big some times)

Now comes the fun part. There are software that can change this thumbnail field/pic independently of the original picture. So it is not really surprising to see a thumbnail and the actual picture different.

BUT THAT IS NOT THE CASE HERE. There is another way the thumbnail can be different. When a Picture is originally taken by a camera, the camera embeds the whole picture as a thumbnail into the file. Now if that picture is Cropped(cropped means only a part of the pic is selected and the rest discarded away), The application that does the cropping sometimes DOES NOT CHANGE the thumbnail field. So the Thumbnail field still contains the whole picture preview. THIS is exactly what has happened here. Only the girls face was cropped to, and the ugly boyfriend removed.

P.S. u can reset the thumbnail by right clicking and selecting update thumbnail.
