first of all i have no background about server administration... that's why my hosting package is managed..
i have installed the FFmpeg extension on my server and it gave me a php startup error and i found out that the version of FFmpeg i have installed is for centos 6
so i have to upgrade the OS to version 6
    my question is ...
can i keep everything the same i mean the PHP, mysql and other installed add-ons
or i have to reinstall everything?
    best regards

for what i know you need to reinstall centos to upgrade to 6.
why don't you just reinstall ffmpeg, it's easier.btw is your centos 32 bit or 86bit?
use this tutorial to install ffmpeg.
    Hope it helps.

i know installing fFmpeg is easier but the problem is that
i must install FFmpeg with extra extension
i installed FFmpeg many times to get those extra extension compiled with the FFmpeg
and finally i found a good tutorial showing how to compile FFmpeg with all extras i want
but i found out it's for Centos 6
and the tutorial you pointed to dosn't include the extras that i want and really i'm very new to server administration
and also i sell a script convert videos to various format and i'm afraid to uninstall the FFmpeg and search for another version with the extras that i want that might take days and during all that the script won't work...

If you want to upgrade from centOS 5.x to centOS 6, consider reloading your server.
we had a difficult time with so many errors and problems when we upgraded manually.

    Don't forget to BACKUP
