I purchased services to have a coder convert my psd to valid HTML/CSS (tableless design). I paid him upfront per his request because he has 15 positive itrader (already one negative but not because a purchase). 2 days later I recieve a link to the files. I retrieve them but notice 7 pretty big errors such as the layout not aligning in the middle and having to scroll to the right to view it, in certain places where text shouldn't be wrapping, there was wrapping text, skewing the design a bit, he also didn't do the rollovers properly on my navigation, those types of mistakes that I simply couldn't accept as complete. I decided, hey, you get what you pay for, but I need these fixed. I offered to give an additional 50% of the original price to have the errors fixed. His response was that he was too busy with other projects now and wasn't sure why it isn't working properly in Internet Explorer and will not be able to fix the errors. I have not responded back to him, have not left itrader, and am unsure on what the right thing to do here is. Personally, I offer services of my own and I dont' think you should be offering services at all if you aren't willing to complete them. He did not offer any type of refund or anything. He simply wants to call it complete and a successful trade. I am contemplating putting a claim in with Paypal to get my full payment back, leaving a negative itrader, and finding another coder to complete the work. Is this fair?
Force him to fix the errors. It doesn't matter how much you paid, if he wasn't happy with the price he could tell you before he actually started working on it. You paid for a working layout and you received the one with errors. He didn't complete his job and therefore you must force him to complete it. Ask him first, say he didn't do his job and if he doesn't fix the errors, give him a negative iTrader + red rep.
It all comes down to what you agreed with him before you paid the money ... I mean did you specifically say exactly how your webpage was to be layed out? fixed width or floating? Alignment of text? Scroll Bars? etc etc?
A bit of advice. Do a 50% of the payment up first and 50% when the project is done. So if things like this happen. You can still have some kind of customer service. But I would have to agree with Geraldm if you did not do the 50/50 payment plan or set up any other requirements. Btw- what kind of browser are you using. IE or Firefox. Sometimes things do not look the same.
True. But I have heard in some forums that many only work in FF. And the same incident happened. Not all do. But for the majority of the coders do check all browsers.
That's wrong, still IE is used more than FF, you can look at stats of any site in Google Analytics. My point is when you happily get someones money and promise something, you have to make sure you will do the job right! Otherwise don't claim anything in first place.
It really does come down to what you agreed to in writing. If he offered a working design then I would say it is not complete and negative rep is warranted here. Forward the original e-mail with the transaction and ask nicely if he is going to fulfill his part of the bargain. Whatever you do, do not say anything negative or confrontational. you must be cordial and polite and professional. If he replies that he is not going to honor his committment than you have proof of that for Paypal. This is a lesson I have learned time and time again. I assume that everyone that I work with is as honorable as I am and that is not always the case. I was raised to believe that a persons word is good because it represents their honor. I can look into a persons eyes because I have nothing to hide and when I say I'm going to do something, it's done. Don't worry about the one person who did wrong, consider all of the other great people out there. Remember, right always wins in the end.
Lmao, I dont code so I dont sell. So I get no Paypal chargebacks for horrible coding. But do what was suggested and seeing about getting your money back via Paypal and leave some neg iTrader.
at the end of the day if you pay for a service you expect to get it. once the paypal dispute is in place then im sure they will be open to discussions
Thanks for the help, I just didn't know if I was goign to be to hard on the guy. All communication was done via PM here, and I have never given him any reason to believe that I was upset with his work outside of pointing out the errors. In fact, I knew he probably wouldn't want to go back and fix errors, so I offered a bit more money as an incentive. My belief is that he isn't quite sure what he's doing, offering cheap rates as a result, and is confused as to how to fix the errors. I'm going to file a claim now with Paypal.
