Search engine use backlinks to rate how valueable your site is the more site that you have linking to your site.The better you will look to the search engines and the end result is that yo will move up in rank. There are many ways to build backlinks,you can hire a service for it and you can do manually by link building,Submitting an article,blog post and forum post and collect quantity as well as quality backlink that will really helpful to your site.
You must not have earned quality backlinks, this might be the reasone you lost you backlinks.. try to get quality backlinks not quantity backlinks..
I wouldn't worry too much if you've still got good positions and good traffic. Google's backlink tracking is always notoriously inaccurate and variable. As seosaroj suggests, just keep on building those link.
There are some reason for decreasing back links. 1. Page unavailable(back link page) 2. your backlink might be removed 3. page load error(back link page)
google doesn't tell us how many backlinks there are for any given site for sure, all the different backlink tools tell you different things eg: yahoo site explorer, open site explorer..etc all say different things. But having said that a lot of links sometimes don't stick because they were not quality in the first place like profile links and blog comments etc
There are several reasons for the drop down of backlinks. Some time if the page on which you got the backlink is not found and just due to this reason Crawlers remove the backlinks and sometime they check for relevancy and if the link is not relevant then also, they remove the backlinks. You dont need to be worry about, try maintain the backlinks by implementing all the processes well.
They could be from blog comments and the blog shut down, hence losing backlinks. Same applies with forums.
Some of you backlinks could have been deleted for what ever reason but also sometimes sites owners build links and when the website gets higher up the ranking they then think thats it and then stop the link building and it then drops down quickly.Link building is a ongoing job,i am not saying this is the case with your site but it does happen.
Same case is wid me that earlier on my site i got 4 backlinks n now its not there....Wat needed to be done for quality backlinks??
Perhaps some of your backlinks are deleted by the owner or the administrator of the site after they found it spam.
