What is the procedure for buying an expired name?

There's a domain name I'd like to buy that's expiring very soon. It's up for auction with godaddy.com. Has anyone bought a name from this godaddy auction? Do I need to be a member of the Godaddy Aftermarket?

I'd really appreciate some advice if someone has done this before.

Yes I have bought a domain through the GD back order system.

If the domain is not released by the current owner the entire process will take 75-80 days from the whois expiration date.

My understanding is that if you do not have a back order in place from somewhere you will not be allowed to bid in any auction that might take place. The auction only happens if more than one person back orders the domain.
