I'll go for Yahoo. It is several things: it is a search engine, a news aggregator, a shopping center, an emailbox, a travel directory, a horoscope and games center, and more. This 'web portal' breadth of choice makes this a very helpful site for Internet beginners. Searching the Web should also be about discovery and exploration, and Yahoo! delivers that in wholesale quantities.

Have you realized that this thread was started back in 2009?

This means that the contenders on the list are outdated, because Altavista does not longer exist at all (absorbed by Yahoo) MSN that today is known to as Bing, and Alexa that is not a search engine at all.

Actually Google rules because Yahoo and Bing have been unable to improve significantly their service to move above G, but this one is not longer as it used to be in the past either.

Some sources cite, Baidu as the fourth contender coming into the major search engine scene, but this is a Chinese search engine so despite seems to be a mighty contender for Google, the language barrier will be a problem here.

This is portal approach that Yahoo has is legacy from its early days, when most search engines used to offer this format.

I'm referring to the latest days of the 20th century when Yahoo, Lycos, Go!, Excite, HotBot, MSN, and other search engines were not just predominant, but offering all that content that Yahoo still provides.

Many of those old engines are still up, but now using either the service of Yahoo, Google, or Bing to power their search features.

In the late 1990s there were only 2 or 3 bare search engines; Altavista, Google, and Mamma, that had no other content but their logo and the query box. Since many years ago, Google has tried to promote the use of its iGoogle version, which is a way to have personalized content in a portal-like format, but this has been another of their failed attempts to replicate what other sites do.

Google has really become the default search engine on the net. But there are others worth looking at such as Blekko and Lycos. Their popularity often derives from ease of use and because they regularly change their interfaces, this can affect the amount of usage they receive.
