These are good questions. I'm not sure what works for me because when I know what I want I just hunt for it, reading the descriptions of what is being offered to see if it matches. It there is one thing I prefer it is product info that make it easy to see what exactly is being offered and what it costs.
Popups are probably the worst simply as people won't click them because they are annoying, even if they have some slight interest in the advert.
I personally like the square ones as they're rarely used. The 250 x 250. A lot of people have a banner at the top/bottom or the right hand side. But few have 250/250 squares, which makes them immediately something different. A lot of big names use these (such as big news networks).
depends what you are selling ... popups are bad ... most poeple just close them or have pop up blocker. the best would be an add with a graphic, but im guessing they would be more expensive
I have had most success with plain text, like when I write reviews. But also banners, especially the 120x600 and 250x250. I am also using a popover with the lightbox effect, it works for me. I am only showing it once for every visitor (using cookies). Jens
