Wow. California is pretty high. Penn is pretty decent. What are the state income tax and sales tax rates like too?
South dakota is low! Missouri was that low until this past January- it raised to $6.50! It is raising to $7.xx within a year. I heard in europe, that minimum wage depends on age- and it can go as high as $20/hour just as a minimum. . .
In the UK from October this year ... Workers aged 22 and over: £5.52 an hour ($11.00) Workers aged 18 to 21: £4.60 an hour ($9.17) Workers aged 16 and 17: £3.40 an hour ($6.77) This may sound high in relation to US rates but bear in mind that the basic cost of living in the UK is a lot higher.
It's a bit amazing that they are debating in Congress about the big impact that raising the minimum wage will have, when many of the most populous states have higher minimums anyway.
$5.15 here in Oklahoma, getting ready to be raised to $5.75. Raising minimum wage is a temporary solution. As you increase wages, businesses raise prices overtime to reflect the additional expenses. Which means higher prices for pretty well everything you buy. Those of us that are on contract will not see a raise becuase we're already above minimum wage and will continue to be. But cost of living will only increase. So I have mixed feelings on it as it is only going to hurt my pocket book. However, I understand that no one can live off of minimum wage right now... if they do, they are definitely having to pinch every penny.
Lol....I complained to my friends when I found that the basic rate for 16-17 year olds is a lot lower (in the UK) than for other age groups....but, looking at it, it doesnt appear that my wage is that bad in comparison with your minimum wage for people of all ages!!! Wow. Suppose that hardly anyone will be on the minimum wage though, so it doesnt really matter!
According to Wiki, my state's min wage (Nevada) is $6.15. That's about 1 Starbucks coffee per hour. I think I could find more than $6.15 on the street in less than an hour.
I live in California and it's 7.50. It may seem a lot for you guys off other states but in California, that is like hard to live off of if you are single living by rent. thankfully I don't rent haha.
